Embry-Riddle to Host Teachers in Space Summer Workshops

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., June 11, 2013 (ERAU PR) —
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s new Commercial Space Operations degree program, the first of its kind in the world, will sponsor Teachers in Space summer workshops for the next five years.

A project of the Space Frontier Foundation (SFF), Teachers in Space stimulates student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by giving teachers authentic astronaut training and real space science experiences combined with information and resources they can take back with them to their classrooms.

Space Frontier Foundation Opens Up Business Competition

sff_logoNyack, NY March 26, 2013 (SFF PR) — The Space Frontier Foundation today opened applications and announced the schedule for 2013 NewSpace Business Plan Competition.

Applications and Executive Summaries can be submitted from now through May 29th.   On June 15th we will be notifying the finalists and they will have until July 12th to submit their full business plans. Boot Camp for finalists begins July 24th, and the competition will be held at the NewSpace Conference July 25-27 in Silicon Valley.

Space Frontier Foundation Rips Lack of Space Talk in Democratic Platform

Last week some of the Republicans among us wrote a press release that slammed the Republican Platform on space. This week the Democrats among us were hoping to have nice things to say about the Democratic platform. No such luck.

At least the platform committee didn’t waste any words. But when it comes to actual substance, they earned the same failing grade as the Republicans.

Space Frontier Foundation: Republicans the Party of Big Government Space

NYACK, N.Y. (SFF PR) — Today, the Republican Party released its 2012 platform, which included a provision entitled “America’s Future in Space: Continuing This Quest.” The non-partisan Space Frontier Foundation issued the following statement in response:

NASA seems to be one Big Government program many Republicans love. The GOP platform criticizes the federal government as “bloated, antiquated and unresponsive to taxpayers” but has nothing but hackneyed praise for NASA, and doesn’t even mention the increasing role of the private sector.  The authors of this platform must imagine they still live in the Cold War of the 1960s, when only governments launched payloads and people into space.

Ten Finalists Named for NewSpace Business Plan Competition

The Space Frontier Foundation has announced 10 finalists for the $110,000 NewSpace2012 Business Competition. The finalists for the late July competition include:

Digital Solid State Propulsion LLC: They have developed a new form of solid-state propellants that are completely inert unless ignited with electric power of the appropriate magnitude. The first truly throttle-able solid rocket motor.

Teachers in Space, NASA to Hold STEM Workshops

The Space Frontier Foundation’s Teachers in Space program and NASA are teaming up this summer for a second round of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workshops that focus on Suborbital Astronautics, Space Medicine and Human Factors, and Suborbital Flight Experiments.

The goal of the workshops is to give teachers the curriculum and experiences necessary to boost STEM instruction, including the opportunity to fly an experiment on a Masten Space suborbital vehicle. The workshop instructors will include a former Space Shuttle Commander as well as leading scientists from NASA, FAA, NewSpace and leading aerospace universities. Secondary teachers currently teaching STEM subjects should apply at tis.spacefrontier.org workshops by April 5, 2012.
