MOJAVE (MTM PR) — Veteran air race pilot and aircraft restoration expert Matt Jackson has joined the Mojave Transportation Museum Foundation as Director of Aircraft Maintenance and member of the board of directors.
MTM Treasurer Cathy Hansen, who invited Jackson to join the group, said “We are thrilled to have someone of Matt’s caliber working with us to help educate the public about aviation.”
Jackson, based in Van Nuys, has flown more Unlimited class race planes than any other pilot in the history of the Reno air races.
This year he will be in the cockpit of Strega, a modified P-51 which has won more races in its class than any other contender, an interesting match-up of pilot and plane that promises a great race in the new Unlimited and Warbird Class (UWRC) at Reno.
Plane Crazy Saturday will continue for at least the next year at the Mojave Air and Space Port. The open house, which takes place on the third Saturday of every month, was in limbo recently due to a dispute over a $100 per event fee the airport levied to pay for security. The Mojave Transportation Museum, which sponsors the open house, had balked at paying it. John Joyce, the publisher […]
The fate of Plane Crazy Saturday remained up in the air Tuesday as the Mojave Transportation Museum (MTM) and the board of the Mojave Air and Space Port came no closer to resolving their differences over the monthly event.
At issue is a new $100 monthly fee that the spaceport has imposed upon MTM to cover security and liability costs. Officials say that the fee is more than fair because other groups that use the airport are charged much more. Officials from the transportation museum say they will not pay to volunteer their time for an event that promotes the airport.
That’s where things have stood for months — and nothing changed on Tuesday during the spaceport board’s monthly meeting. Both sides restated their positions without budging an inch. As a result, this week’s Plane Crazy Saturday could be the very last one in Mojave.
