SILVER SPRING, Md. (NOAA PR) — NOAA successfully completed a year-long, first-ever Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Microsoft’s Azure Orbital, which explored how commercial capabilities could assist NOAA’s satellite operations by using commercial products and cloud operations to control the satellites and acquire data in a cyber-secure environment. The information gleaned from this CRADA will provide input to NOAA’s future strategic activities.
The CRADA was a “proof-of-concept” effort to determine if commercial cloud services can provide satellite mission management for NOAA’s legacy polar satellites. As a secondary objective, Azure demonstrated the ability to comply with some government security controls in both a rapid and effective manner.
Redmond, Wash. (Microsoft PR) — Satellites now provide huge datasets that require complex processing, data routing, and storage. To satisfy the growing demand for this data, Microsoft has teamed with Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, to rapidly analyze imagery data captured by satellite providers in space orbit. Esri’s ArcGIS Image technology will provide processing and analysis on imagery hosted in Azure Orbital, Microsoft’s Satellite Ground Station As a Service.
LUXEMBOURG, 22 September 2020 (SES PR) – SES today announced it has joined as the medium Earth orbit (MEO) connectivity partner for Microsoft Azure Orbital, Microsoft’s new managed service enabling network operators to communicate and control their satellite capacity, process data, and scale their operations directly within Azure.
The integration is part of a multi-year agreement between the two companies that accelerates and expands SES’s use of Azure to significantly advance the digital transformation of the company’s services and operations as part of its cloud-first strategy.
