L-3 Communications Holdings Inc., which sells tools that can be used for snooping on electronic signals and other communications, also reported a higher quarterly profit Thursday. The military contractor said it was helped by higher sales and Pentagon orders of surveillance and intelligence equipment.

Clark Lindsey over at Hobby Space points out that the federal government has denied PlanetSpace’s appeal of NASA’s decision to award COTS contracts to Orbital Sciences Corporation and SpaceX. COTS funds commercial payload delivery to the International Space Station.
The notice on the Government Accountability Office’s website gives no reason for the denial. And it is not clear whether PlanetSpace has any recourse at this point. The company has made no statement on its website.

In a statement, Scaled Composites accused the media of bias and suspect motives in raising questions about the design and stability of its WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft. The questions arose after the vehicle’s tail struck the ground during a test flight earlier this week.
