Aurora Flight Systems Wins NASA Deal for Space Nuclear Reactors

PRESS RELEASE

Aurora Flight Sciences announced today that the company has been selected for a NASA Phase II award to develop technology to support autonomous control and protection of space-based nuclear reactor systems.

Aurora will be developing an advanced reactor instrumentation and control system (RICS) for robotic and manned space vehicles and planetary surface systems.

First Hubble Spacewalk Underway

NASA MISSION UPDATE

Mission specialists John Grunsfeld and Drew Feustel kicked off STS-125’s first spacewalk at 8:52 a.m. EDT.

During the 6½ hour excursion, the pair will remove the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 and replace it with a new wide-field camera. The new camera will allow the telescope to take large-scale, clear and detailed photos over a wide range of colors.

Challenger Center Receives Top AIAA Award

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) honors Challenger Center with their 2009 Foundation Award for Excellence

With more than 31,000 members, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is the world’s largest professional society devoted to the progress of engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense. In a critical 2008 AIAA report, “Working Together to Build the Aerospace Workforce of Tomorrow”, AIAA noted that “Methods should be sought to support, expand, and “clone” programs like the Challenger Learning Centers, which have used space as the “spark plug” to motivate STEM education interest in over 5 million children.”

The Rotary National Award for Space Achievement (RNASA) Foundation’s National Space Trophy was presented to former NASA Administrator Michael D. Griffin on Friday, May 8 at a gala held at the Houston Hyatt Regency hotel.

Clear Lake High School Army JROTC presented the colors, Kemah City Councilwoman Kelly Williams sang the anthem, and Greg Fincke, senior pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston, gave the invocation prior to a dinner featuring filet mignon with port wine reduction and jumbo crabmeat purse.
