NASA Deputy Administrator Garver to Give Keynote at Suborbital Researchers Conference

NASA’s Deputy Administrator, Lori Garver, will be the opening keynote speaker at the Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference on February 18-20, 2010, at which scientists, engineers, educators, and vehicle developers will gather to discuss the research and education benefits of new commercial suborbital spacecraft.

The conference, co-organized by the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), and the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), will take place in Boulder, Colorado. Deputy Administrator Garver is scheduled to speak on the opening day of the conference on Thursday, February 18.

More Legal Trouble for Courtney Stadd

Ex-top NASA official charged in Mississippi
Associated Press

A former high-ranking NASA official pleaded not guilty Monday to nine federal charges accusing him of steering a $600,000 contract to Mississippi State University, a client of his consulting firm.

Courtney A. Stadd had already been convicted of steering a different contract for almost $10 million to the university. Stadd was sentenced in November to three years probation.

Russia Begins Nuclear Rocket Engine Program

Russia earmarks $17 mln to research nuclear-propelled spacecraft
RIA Novosti

The Russian government will allocate 500 million rubles ($16.7 million) in 2010 on a project to build a spaceship with a nuclear engine.

In line with an order issued by the Cabinet on December 29, a total of 430 million rubles ($14.4 mln) will be given to the Rosatom state nuclear corporation, and the rest to the Federal Space Agency Roscosmos.

Gagarin Training Center Celebrates 50th Anniversary

ROSKOSMOS PRESS RELEASE

The Cosmonaut Training Center was inaugurated on January 11, 1960 in Star City outside Moscow. In 8, it was named after Yuri Gagarin, the first man to fly in space. In 1968, the USSR Defense Minister ordered to celebrate GCTC birthday on April 12, to mark the date of the first human space mission as well.
