With His Rover Discovered, Garriott Ponders Lunar Property Rights

Richard Garriott

Space tourist Richard Garriott has posted a short note on his Facebook page musing on the issue of lunar property rights. He owns the Soviet-era Lunokhod 2 rover, which was recently located in photographs sent down by an American orbiter.

Garriott has kindly given me permission to reproduce the piece below. He cautions: “Please note that it was a brief note, and meant in a light, but provocative spirit.”

In 1993 I purchased Lunokhod 2 from the Russian government and corporate owners. This is not disputed. That purchase made me the worlds only private owner of an object on a foreign celestial body. Just that, was enough to make this a very interesting acquisition to me!

Last week a Canadian researcher found the Lunokhod in high resolution photos taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Its tracks and the actual rover can be clearly seen. As it is the only privately owned object on the moon, I have received many calls on the subject, asking all kinds of questions about it, such as why did I buy it, and what do I think it means to own something on the moon.

Sea Launch Secures $12 Million in Funding From Space Launch Services

SEA LAUNCH PRESS RELEASE

Sea Launch received final approval on March 17 from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware on its motion to secure a second tranche of debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing in the amount of $12 million from Space Launch Services, LLC (SLS). SLS also provided the first tranche of DIP financing in the amount of $12.5 million to Sea Launch, pursuant to an earlier court order dated December 3, 2009.

Sea Launch, a leading provider of launch services to the commercial satellite industry, received interim approval from the court earlier this month for this second tranche of the DIP credit facility, which is providing working capital for continued Sea Launch operations while the company proceeds through its Chapter 11 reorganization. Sea Launch is planning to submit its Plan of Reorganization to the court shortly, as a step toward emerging from Chapter 11 status.

An artist's conception of a Virgin Galactic flight above Spaceport America in New Mexico

Although New Mexico is spending $200 million to build a home for space tourism provider Virgin Galactic, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports no one from the state has yet to fork over the $200,000 required for a suborbital flight:

[Virgin Commercial Director Stephen] Attenborough said the answer so far is “no.” But he pointed out that Gov. Bill Richardson on several occasions has indicated interest in a flight.

In the meantime, I thought I would leave you with a pictorial essay of a trip I took up to the Golden Gate last weekend….

Pop those champagne corks, all you would-be space tourists. It looks like you’ll get to vacation in orbit after all.

A pair of Russian media outlets say that the country’s space program will begin taking tourists to the International Space Station beginning in 2012. Seven tourist flights were flown between 2001-09, ending with Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte’s holiday last September.
