Lockheed Martin, Ball Aerospace Demonstrated Safer Docking System

Astronauts for the STS-134 shuttle mission attend a demonstration of the STORRM navigation system that will make docking operations safer and easier for spacecraft flying to the International Space Station (ISS). The demonstration took place on July 20 at Ball Aerospace.

BALL AEROSPACE PRESS RELEASE

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and NASA conducted a successful technology demonstration of an inventive navigation system that will make docking operations safer and easier for spacecraft flying to the International Space Station (ISS). The demonstration that took place at the Ball facility in Boulder, Colo., showcased the dynamic nature of the sensors by simulating crewed and uncrewed docking operations.

Modern Space Elevator “Fathers” to Attend Redmond Conference Next Month

ISEC PRESS RELEASE

The International Space Elevator Consortium (ISEC), an independent coalition designed to promote outreach and foster research relating to the construction of an Elevator to Space, announced today that Russian engineer Yuri Artsutanov and American engineer Jerome Pearson, pioneers of the modern Space Elevator concept, will appear at the 2010 Space Elevator Conference.

The following are notes from Jim Keravala on two separate talks given by NASA officials — Doug Comstock and Charles Miller — on Saturday during the NewSpace 2010 conference. Both men talked about how NASA is working with the private sector to open up space so that it is cheaper and easier to access and use for a variety of activities.

A camera aboard NASA’s Mars Odyssey spacecraft has helped develop the most accurate global Martian map ever. Researchers and the public can access the map via several websites and explore and survey the entire surface of the Red Planet.
