Space Workers Laid Off as NASA Picks New Direction, Winds Down Shuttle Program

Layoffs began last week at key NASA centers and contractors as a result of multiple factors. Some related to the wind down of the space shuttle program. Others resulted from Congressional action that will transition the space agency away from the Constellation program. A smaller number involved NASA budget reductions to one center.

Experimental Falcon proposed to Azerbaijan for launch of first national satellite

A government source says that within the relevant tender U.S. company SpaceX has suggested Falcon missile carrier for launch of the first satellite of Azerbaijan.

“This carrier rocket has not carried out any commercial launch of satellites, and in case of its victory in the tender the cost of a contract with insurance company can be incredible,” the source said….

Defense Funding to Upgrade Commercial Launch Complex at Cape Canaveral

On September 24, 2010, the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast was awarded a $500,000 Defense Infrastructure Grant from the State of Florida – to be used for critical communications upgrades at Space Florida’s Space Launch Complex 46 (SLC-46) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS).

EPA Fines SpaceX $45,600 for Hazardous Waste Violations

Japan Seeks to Commercialize Space Program as ISS Effort Fizzles

Space News reports that that Japanese government wants to commercialize the nation’s space program even as another report shows outlines its dismal record in convincing business to use the Kibo module on the International Space Station:

The Japanese government wants to promote more private-sector space development by reorienting its spending away from its research focus and toward commercially oriented programs and crafting a new law to permit commercial launch services, Japanese government and industry officials said Sept. 28.

NCSU Professor Looks at Constructing Buildings on the Moon

The key to the stability of any building is its foundation, but it is difficult to test some building sites in advance – such as those on the moon. New research from North Carolina State University is helping resolve the problem by using computer models that can utilize a small sample of soil to answer fundamental questions about how soil at a building site will interact with foundations.

NASA Launches Commercial Crew Development Round 2

NASA has wasted no time getting started on Round 2 of its Commercial Crew Development program. Less than 48 hours after the House voted to approve a commercial friendly NASA appropriations bill, the space agency publicly announced the second phase.
