Hughes Debuts Multi-Transport Satellite-LTE Capability, Unveils Groundbreaking New Flat Panel Antenna Technology for OneWeb Service

GERMNATOWN, Md., March 22, 2022 (Hughes PR)Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), an innovator in satellite and multi-transport technologies and networks for more than 50 years, successfully demonstrated two new technologies at the SATELLITE 2022 trade show in Washington, D.C. Hughes executives showcased new technology that seamlessly integrates Geostationary (GEO) satellite and LTE transports into a single, reliable, low-latency broadband internet connection for consumers. Hughes then revealed its new technology for electronically steerable, flat-panel antennas, including a prototype for delivering OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) connectivity services.

Hughes Selected to Deploy Private 5G Network for DoD

GERMANTOWN, MD, March 21, 2022 (Hughes PR) — Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), an innovator in satellite and multi-transport technologies and networks for 50 years, today announced the award of an $18 million contract from the Department of Defense (DoD) to deploy a standalone 5G network at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington state. The Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) was issued through the Information Warfare Research Project (IWRP) consortium, a collaboration to engage industry and academia to develop and mature technologies in the field of information warfare that enhance Navy and Marine Corps mission effectiveness. Hughes will serve as the prime contractor connecting the base with a secure 5G network to support operations, maintenance and flight traffic management. The Hughes 5G network will utilize spectrum from DISH Wireless, the only carrier capable of providing the right combination of low band, mid band, and high band (mmWave) spectrum. This work is part of on-going DoD 5G experimentation led by the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

CNES Selects Exotrail to Optimize Mega Constellation Operations

TOULOUSE, France (Exotrail PR) — In February 2022, following a competitive tender process, CNES selected Exotrail to complete a research and technology study to optimise the operations of mega constellations. The study will focus on mid and low earth orbit where thousands of satellites are soon expected to be operational and propelled by electric propulsion. It will determine the best operational procedures to implement in mega constellation’s flight dynamic system including station keeping and collision avoidance – two critical operations.

Teal Group Mission Model Counts 34,196 Space Payloads Through 2031

WASHINGTON, DC, March 21(Teal Group PR) — Teal Group announced today release of new numbers for its Worldwide Mission Model of space payloads proposed to be built and launched during 2022-2031. In its survey, Teal identified a total of 34,196 satellites, probes and capsules destined for orbit over the next 10 years.

“For more than two decades now, we’ve been annually revising our payload counts,” says Teal’s senior space analyst, Marco Cáceres. “The growth trend in the numbers has been consistent since we first started tracking payloads in 1992, but in the past few years we’ve noticed sharp increases in the payload programs under development and being planned.”

Leonardo DRS Announces Sale of Global SATCOM Business to SES

RESTON, Va., March 22, 2022 (Leonardo DRS PR) — Leonardo DRS Inc., announced today it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its Global Enterprise Solutions (GES) business to SES for $450 million. The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of Leonardo and of SES. Finalization of the deal is targeted for the second half of 2022 subject to regulatory approvals.

“The DRS GES business is well-respected by its customers and within the satellite communications (SATCOM) provider services market, and we are very pleased with the agreement reached with SES,” said Bill Lynn, CEO of Leonardo DRS. “While the DRS GES business has flourished, Leonardo DRS has shifted its portfolio focus, and selling it now makes the most business sense,” he said.

Micro-geostationary Satellite Enters Design Phase

PARIS (ESA PR) — A small but powerful European telecommunications satellite – the first of a series – is to be developed under a contract signed between ESA and SWISSto12, an innovative company based in Renens, Switzerland.

The MicroGEO Partnership Project is part of ESA’s efforts to support fast, dynamic and agile private space firms to foster innovation and promote the competitiveness of the European space industry.

The slimline satellite will be placed into geostationary orbit some 36,000 kilometres above the Earth, from where it will stream data or broadcast television. Measuring just one cubic metre, the MicroGEO satellite will be one tenth the size of conventional geostationary satellites.

AFRL’s Cislunar Highway Patrol System Seeks Industry Collaboration

KIRTLAND AFB, New Mexico (AFRL PR) – The Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate is seeking partners to design and inform the capabilities of the Cislunar Highway Patrol System (CHPS) satellite, to provide space domain awareness beyond Geosynchronous orbit, in the region of the moon that is experiencing increasing activity.

A draft Request for Proposals was posted last week, on the NSTXL.org website, and companies who are part of the Space Enterprise Consortium (SpEC) are encouraged to submit ideas by the deadline of 11 a.m. MST on April 1, 2022.
