A spaceship! Famous astronauts! Kate Winslet! Princess Bea! Protesters! Air conditioned portable toilets! Champagne! And Richard Branson hanging off a building!
Those were just some of the fun things at Spaceport America in New Mexico today. The only thing really lacking: Wifi and reliable cell reception.
It was a fun time in the desert as Virgin Galactic dedicated its nearly completed terminal. Branson renamed the giant building as the Virgin Galactic Gateway to Space while opening a bottle of champagne and hanging down on a rope on the side of the structure. The British mogul rappelled down at the end an aerial interpretive performance by a dance troop against the hangar’s giant windows.

Mountain View, CA (October 12, 2011) — Singularity University (SU) has announced the appointment of Rob Nail, a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur and an associate founder of SU, as Chief Executive Officer.
Most recently Rob has been serving as SU’s Director of the Graduate Studies Program. He succeeds Neil Jacobstein, who will continue to co-chair SU’s Artificial Intelligence and Robotics education track and take on the role of Director of Executive Academics.

UKSA PR — Space technology experts from Surrey Satellite Technology (SSTL) and the Surrey Space Centre (SSC) have announced the four lucky winners of the ‘Space App Competition’ who will see their Android Applications run on smartphone-powered satellite STRaND-1, due for launch into space next year.
Applying through a competition held on Facebook, the four winners were chosen for their app’s scientific benefits, their creativity, or the app’s ability to get young people enthusiastic about science and technology. The winning apps make use of the technology of the Android smartphone, including the microphone, speakers, camera, and display, in conjunction with the satellite’s conventional features – enabling STRaND-1 to do things in space that no one has done before.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL (October 13, 2011) – Today, Space Florida President Frank DiBello and Mr. Jaime Denis, Director General of the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further enhance business development opportunities between Florida and Spain in the aerospace sector.
Space Florida and INTA will now begin the process of the forming a joint venture commercial business that will become a world leader in small satellite development, manufacturing, sales, R&D and launch.
