Air Force Says Space Programs are High Priority Despite Funding Cuts

2/23/2012 – WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Investment in space programs was a priority in this year’s Air Force budget, according to Undersecretary of the Air Force Erin Conaton.

Air Force leaders sought to sustain and modernize the capabilities that enable the service to support the Department of Defense’s new strategic guidance, Conaton told reporters during a media roundtable Feb. 17 in the Pentagon.

Clyde Space Receives UKSA Funding for CubeSat Projects

CLYDE SPACE PR — Clyde Space has been awarded funding for two advanced space technology development projects. The projects are joint developments; the first with the Advanced Space Concepts Laboratory at University of Strathclyde and the second with Mars Space Ltd in Southampton. These projects are part of the UK Space Agency’s National Space Technology Programme (NSTP) where twenty-nine projects are receiving grant funding to develop commercial products and services using space technology or space-derived data and are part of the ‘Space for Growth’ competition lasting between 6 and 9 months.

NMSA Issues General Services, Spaceport Operations Center RFPs

LAS CRUCES, NM (NMSA PR) — The New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) has issued new Requests For Proposals (RFPs) for the General Services and Spaceport Operations Center Fit-Out Design contracts at Spaceport America.

General Services RFP

The scope of work required for the General Services contract includes providing labor, supervision, management, supplies, materials, tools and equipment to perform:

  • Development of policies and procedures for all general services activities
  • Maintenance planning and scheduling
  • Building and utility maintenance and repairs
  • Interior and exterior building maintenance
  • Janitorial services
  • Fuel storage operation and maintenance
  • Motor vehicle and aircraft fueling
  • Foreign Object Debris (FOD) removal
  • Grounds-keeping and landscape maintenance
  • Sustainability management, including on-site materials logistics and waste management
  • Roads maintenance
  • Airfield, runway and taxiway/apron maintenance

AAS Supports President’s Proposed NASA Budget

AAS PR — The American Astronomical Society (AAS) today issued a statement thanking President Obama for his strong support of science as embodied in his proposed budget for fiscal year (FY) 2013 but asking him and the Congress to strive harder to maintain a balance of small, medium, and large space missions in astronomy and astrophysics, planetary science, and solar physics. Some provisions of the President’s FY 2013 budget, especially a 20 percent cut in NASA’s planetary science funding, threaten to undermine the recommendations of recent decadal surveys of these fields by the National Academy of Sciences.

UKSA Awards £2.5 Million for Commercial R&D Projects

UKSA PR — Twenty-two innovative British companies are to share £2.5 million ($3.97 million) of government support for the design and development cutting-edge space products and technologies.

As part of the UK Space Agency’s National Space Technology Programme (NSTP), twenty-nine projects are receiving grant funding to develop commercial products and services using space technology or space-derived data. These ‘fast-track projects’ applied as part of the ‘Space for Growth’ competition, and each will last between 6 and 9 months. The projects will carry out research and development in: Satellite Telecommunications; Sensing; Position, Navigation & Timing; Robotics & Exploration and Access to Space.
