NASA Conducts Successful Orion Drop Test


HOUSTON (NASA PR) — On Feb. 29, NASA successfully conducted another drop test of the Orion crew vehicle’s entry, descent and landing parachutes high above the Arizona desert in preparation for the vehicle’s orbital flight test in 2014. Orion will carry astronauts deeper into space than ever before, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and ensure a safe re-entry and landing.

GLXP News: Team FREDNET Gets New Lunar Data Task Order From NASA


Huntsville, AL/Scotts Valley, CA (Team FREDNET PR) —
NASA awarded Team FREDNET – The Open Space Society Inc. a new Task Order in its $10 million Innovative Lunar Demonstrations Data (ILDD) contract.  Under the ILDD program, NASA purchases information derived from the program development and subsequent robotic operations on the surface of the Moon. The $100,000 task order brings total funding under the ILDD contract thus far to $110,000.

SpaceX Conducts Falcon 9 Countdown Test

Spaceflight Now reports:

SpaceX loaded more than 75,000 gallons of liquid propellant into the Falcon 9 rocket Thursday for a pre-launch countdown test designed to wring out any issues with the launcher, ground systems and support teams before the mission blasts off to the International Space Station as soon as late April.

SwRI: NSRC 2012 Was Awesome!

Canadian Government Renews ISS Commitment, Introduces Two New Space Projects

Québec City, Quebec, February 29, 2012 (CSA PR)  – The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency, today announced Canada’s intention to renew its commitment to the International Space Station (ISS). Alongside Steve MacLean, President of the Canadian Space Agency, Minister Paradis also unveiled two unique space projects, Microflow and Lab on a CD, designed to accelerate how patients are diagnosed, in space and on Earth.

ISTA, Skolkovo Foundation to Establish Suborbital Business Incubator

SKOLKOVO PR — The Skolkovo Foundation and the International Space Transport Association will jointly develop the first international knowledge center for commercial suborbital spaceflight.

The Center is to be part of Moscow’s Science & Technology Park and will host three business units: (Eco) Tech, Mini Satellites & Telecommunications and Suborbital Space Flights. The Skolkovo Foundation, with President Dmitry Medvedev as Head of the Board of Trustees, offers a wide range of financial support possibilities for international businesses to flourish. Its set up follows a phased implementation process and will be developed in close cooperation with the International Space Transport Association.

Congressmen Call Approach to Commercial Crew Safety “Inexcusable”

Washington, DC (Peter Olson PR) — Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) and several colleagues today urged White House Office of Science and Technology Director John Holdren to follow through on his understanding that NASA should retain all encompassing responsibility over the safety requirements for development of commercial crew vehicles. Under proposed agreements between NASA and commercial crew entities, NASA would not have the necessary authority to oversee and approve the safety measures needed to keep our astronauts safe.
