Mojave Spaceport Receives FAA Grant for Advanced Fire-fighting Equipment

The Mojave Air and Space Port has received $23,750 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration toward the purchase of equipment that will allow firefighters to rapidly bore a hole through the side of a composite vehicle and put out a fire inside of it.

Sarah Brightman Appears Headed for Space

It appears that British recording artist Sarah Brightman will become the world’s next millionaut space tourist.

Space Adventures has announced an Oct. 10 press conference with Brightman in Moscow where the soprano will make a “groundbreaking” announcement. Brightman has been in negotiations with the Virginia-based company for a trip into space.

Space Adventures has booked eight trips to the International Space Station for seven wealthy adventurers aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The company is also trying to fill a second seat for a circum-lunar flight, for which tickets costs $150 million apiece. The moon flight is set to take place by early 2017.

XCOR Appoints PR Director

FAA Awards $474K in Commercial Space Transportation Grants

WASHINGTON (FAA PR) – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced nearly $500,000 in new Space Transportation Infrastructure matching grants to three projects located in California, Colorado and Hawaii that will help develop and expand commercial space transportation infrastructure.

“These investments will help us continue to develop a safe and robust commercial space industry in the United States,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Baumgartner’s Red Bull Stratos Jump Planned for Oct. 8

(Red Bull Stratos PR) — The final countdown for Felix Baumgartner’s history making jump from the edge of space began on Monday after the Red Bull Stratos Technical Project Director Art Thompson declared the repaired space capsule is fit and all systems are go.

The tentative launch date for Baumgartner’s attempt to jump from an altitude of 36,576 meters has now been set for October 8, ending a period of uncertainty for the team and, for Baumgartner, the agony of waiting. The Austrian extreme sport athlete had to endure delays due to the repairs but is now delighted that the countdown is on for his attempt to become the first person to break the sound barrier in freefall and set four other world records in the process.

Spaceport Colorado Receives $200K FAA Grant

WASHINGTON (Mark Udall PR) — Colorado U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall announced Sept. 25, 2012, the approval of $200,000 in grant funding from the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) to conduct a feasibility study on locating a spaceport in Denver.

SpaceX Purchasing Land Near Brownsville

The Brownsville Herald reports that SpaceX has been purchasing land in Cameron County, Texas, near where it is considering building a private launch complex for its Falcon rockets:

However, local officials emphasized that this does not mean SpaceX has made the decision to settle here. “But it is a good sign,” Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos said.

Other than the property that SpaceX is said to have placed options on, the firm this year has purchased at least three lots in the Spanish Dagger Subdivision under the name Dogleg Park LLC, The Herald found in public documents.
