Video: Richard “David” Branson on Battling Goliath

Video Caption: Branson recounts the rise and fall of Virgin Cola, a David vs. Goliath story with lessons for startups large and small. Editor’s Note: Branson’s normal situation is definitely reversed in suborbital space; Virgin Galactic is the Goliath of the industry. The only organization bigger is NASA — and the space agency is both hard to demonize and has been nothing but supportive.  It must be an odd situation. […]

Plane Crazy Saturday’s Fate Still Up in the Air

Mojave_Symbol
The fate of Plane Crazy Saturday remained up in the air Tuesday as the Mojave Transportation Museum (MTM) and the board of the Mojave Air and Space Port came no closer to resolving their differences over the monthly event.

At issue is a new $100 monthly fee that the spaceport has imposed upon MTM to cover security and liability costs. Officials say that the fee is more than fair because other groups that use the airport are charged much more. Officials from the transportation museum say they will not pay to volunteer their time for an event that promotes the airport.

That’s where things have stood for months — and nothing changed on Tuesday during the spaceport board’s monthly meeting.  Both sides restated their positions without budging an inch. As a result, this week’s Plane Crazy Saturday could be the very last one in Mojave.

Plug and play is a concept the developers of NanoRacks took to heart and to space, with the design and use of their original modules. This led to other innovations as the company progressed. In recognition of their work, they have received the 2012 International Space Station (ISS) Innovation Award of the Year at the second annual ISS Research and Development Conference.

Mikulski to House: Drop Dead!

The Senate Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, led by Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), has approved an FY 2014 budget that includes $18 billion for NASA. The amount is higher than the $17.7 billion requested by the Obama Administration. The budget sets up a showdown with the House, where two subcommittees have given the space agency $16.85 billion and $16.6 billion. In a press release, the committee said: “No […]

LONDON (UKSA) — Through the UK Space Agency, the Government is set to invest £60 million in the development of the SABRE – a British-designed rocket engine which could revolutionise the fields of propulsion and launcher technology, and significantly reduce the costs of accessing space.

SABRE has the potential to create 21,000 high value engineering and manufacturing jobs; maximise the UK’s access to a conservatively estimated £13.8 billion launcher market over the next thirty years; and provide economic benefits from spill-over technology markets.
