Time Names SpaceShipTwo One of Top 25 Inventions of 2013

Time Magazine has named SpaceShipTwo to its list of top 25 inventions in 2013. After nearly 12 years at the helm of the Mojave Air and Space Port, CEO and General Manager Stu Witt plans to retire no later than the end of his current contract on July 1, 2015.

On Tuesday, the spaceport’s Board of Directors formed a three-person committee to begin the process of finding a replacement for the spaceport’s long-serving chief. Directors Jim Balentine and Marie Walker will serve on the group, which will develop requirements for the position but not a list of possible replacements, Board President JoAnn Painter said.

Asked if he might leave earlier than July 2015, Witt said he served at the pleasure of the board. He added that under his contract, he is required to give the board two notices, one at 24 months and another at 6 months.

WASHINGTON (NASA PR) — NASA managers are postponing the upcoming Orbital Sciences commercial cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station to proceed with a series of spacewalks to replace a faulty pump module on the space station.

NASA Television will air a news briefing at 3 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Dec. 18 to preview the spacewalks.

Orbital Sciences’ Cygnus spacecraft, atop its Antares rocket, now will launch no earlier than January. The postponement of the Antares launch will allow ample time for the station crew to focus on repairing a faulty pump module that stopped working properly on Dec. 11.
