Video Caption: NASA’s Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) project, managed by NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, is developing large solar arrays and high-powered electric thrusters that could enable cost-effective trips to Mars, asteroids and other destinations in our solar system. SEP will use an electrically propelled system energized by electric power from the on-board solar arrays that will use 10 times less propellant than a comparable, conventional chemical propulsion […]
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin announced today that Russia will ban the use of RD-180 engines for use in launching U.S. military satellites. Presumably, this means the country will stop exporting the engines for use aboard ULA’s Atlas V launch vehicles. Rogozin also announced that Russia would end participation in the International Space Station in 2020, thus rejecting a NASA proposal to continue operations until at least 2024. He […]

While Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the U.S. Air Force has dominated the headlines, another development with the potential to restructure the space industry has flown completely under the radar: a deepening relationship between Virgin Galactic and Google.
Overt the past month, Virgin Galactic conducted a series of Google Hangouts about its space tourism program in conjunction with the Google Science Fair. One hangout featured VG Vice President William Pomerantz and Richard Branson’s son, Sam; a second had three engineers live from The Spaceship Company’s FAITH hangar in Mojave, Calif; and a third featured two ticket holders who will be aboard future SpaceShipTwo suborbital tourism flights.
Good morning, everyone. I co-authored a story published in the London Sunday Times today about cracks that have been discovered in WhiteKnightTwo’s wings. The article is behind a pay wall. Sorry about that. It doesn’t go into a lot of specific detail about the cracks, so here’s a bit more information. The cracks were discovered during an inspection conducted after Virgin Galactic took possession of WhiteKnightTwo from builder Scaled Composites […]

Three nanosatellites, known as Cubesats, are deployed from a Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (SSOD) attached to the Kibo laboratory’s robotic arm. (Credit: NASA)
Many of the CubeSats and nanosats flown to date have been fairly simple spacecraft, without much ability to maneuver, perform complex tasks, or travel beyond low Earth orbit.
NASA is looking to change that situation. The space agency recently selected 26 projects relating to CubeSats and nanosats for funding under its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I programs.

BREVARD COUNTY, Florida (Florida Space Coast EDC PR) – The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast is pleased to announce that Northrop Grumman Corporation has selected Brevard County for a significant expansion that could add 1,800 jobs at full program capacity at an average annual salary of $100,000.
