World View Reaches 1,000 Reservations for Flights to the Edge of Space

TUCSON, Ariz. (World View PR) — World View, the leading stratospheric ballooning and space tourism company, has accomplished a new milestone: reaching one thousand reservations for its space tourism program taking participants to the edge of space in a zero-pressure stratospheric balloon and pressurized space capsule. As seasoned leaders in stratospheric exploration and space tourism, the company has now sold the greatest number of seats in the space tourism category.
World View’s reservations for Spaceport Grand Canyon have also been sold out for the first year, with commercial flights slated to begin in 2024. World View’s reservations come from 32 countries with the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom leading the list. A growing list of Explorers have reserved at multiple spaceports while others purchased additional tickets for friends and family, including 43 reservations for a full-capsule.
“Reaching 1,000 reservations underscores the passion, excitement and interest for this unique experience that World View offers. This means 1,000 new people will be able to enjoy majestic views of both Earth and space for an adventure that’s never been this accessible to humanity. The fact that the Grand Canyon spaceport flight has sold out for the first year also showcases the market demand and growing interest in space tourism. We have been working diligently to share our purpose-first mission with future guests so that they will join us on the journey to rediscovering our wondrous Earth.” said Ryan M Hartman, President and Chief Executive Officer of World View.
Today’s announcement follows the company’s entry to the space tourism and exploration market in late 2021, offering a more affordable, long-duration and accessible space experience that couples enjoying the unique views of Earth and space. World View voyages will originate out of the Seven Wonders of the World, Stratospheric Edition™ including Spaceports Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef, Serengeti, Aurora Borealis, Amazonia, Pyramids of Giza and Great Wall of China, providing participants the opportunity to experience these wonders from the ground and then view the same location from the edge of space.
Flights cost $50,000 and will lift eight participants and two World View crew members in a zero-pressure stratospheric balloon and pressurized space capsule to 100,000 feet altitude, nearly 23 miles into the stratosphere, for a transformative experience that will last six to eight hours. Participants will lift off before dawn to watch the sunrise over Earth, once at the apogee of 100,000 feet, Explorers will witness the darkness of space, see the stars above, and view the curvature of the Earth.

$50M in orders. Apparently a real business where I didn’t think one would grow.
The stratosphere is not space. 23 miles is high, but not ‘space’ high.
That’s why it’s usually referred to as the edge of space. Which tends to get a bit semantic anyway since there is no physical point where space begins. It’s a gradual transition from being in the atmosphere to being above it, by the time you get as high as these balloons will be flying you are above nearly all of the atmosphere, providing a visual experience that is very much like actually being in space. And the price of $50,000 opens it up to lot more people. Sure someone can pay nearly ten times that amount if they want to go to 50 miles and experience an even darker sky and a few minutes of weightlessness. But then you have to deal with people who enjoy pointing out that this is still below the international boundary for space. So someone could pay probably double the VG price to ride on New Shepard, even though the experience won’t be much different. But by reaching 62 miles they won’t have to worry about that pesky asterisk.
Many argue though that that’s still not real spaceflight since they don’t reach orbit. So in that case someone can spend maybe thirty times the Blue Origin price so that they orbit the Earth for a few days. But that seems a bit limiting, being cooped up in a capsule for three days with not a lot of room to spin around and all of that. So in that case they can spend maybe double that for a week at ISS or a future space station.
After considering all of these options (and prices) I’ll bet a lot of people will be quite happy with what they will be getting for $50,000.
Yes, what you are selling is the experience.
I still wonder about their decision to launch from Florida. Dangerous weather for ballooning, just a featureless ocean to look at, and the prospect of a dangerous water landing, perhaps even in a foreign nation, the Bahamas, requiring them to secure additional clearances and paperwork for emergencies.
If they flew it from Spaceport America they would get stunning views of the mountains, deserts, and plains with more predictable weather along with numerous safe landing opportunities on the southern Great Plains.
They should have developed stratospheric telecom airship platforms. They still could.
The wordpress blog “Ice on the Moon” has a post titled “The Coming Zeppelin Satellite Apocalypse” that talks about this. Really good.
It would put Starlink out of business in a heartbeat.
LEO Megaconstellations are a slow-motion catastrophe.

You mean the (CZSA) Gary?
Who is Gary?
My username is SLSFanboy and calling me that is your gang’s dog whistle.
And it is disgusting.
You are that resident sociopath over at spacex news that keeps viciously harassing me. Such good fun, huh?
You are a classic cyberstalker and need to be banned. I am afraid of you and have been for several months since you started bullying me. You are f-ing crazy.
One of the most malicious and unstable people I have ever interacted with.
And since you can’t make my comments disappear like you and your friends have been doing over at spacex news…..Doug Messier is going to do something about this.
Long past time for your freak show to stop endlessly harassing me because I am not in your Musk Cult.
