On the Road This Week

After four days at the CubeSat Developers Workshop in beautiful San Luis Obispo, I am on a space-themed road trip. Now in Flagstaff, where I plan to visit the Lowell Observatory where Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto. Tomorrow will be viewing the Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater.

Ultimate destination is Boca Chica to see SpaceX’s giant.

Safe travels! You should go by Corn Ranch on the way and see the murals to Jeff Bezos, the other Texas space billionaire, in Van Horn. You could even mail some post cards to space from there.

Blue Origin’s space shots give tiny Texas town a boost that’s bigger than expected

“Just outside Van Horn’s Clark Hotel Museum, Blue Origin erected a mailbox for postcards that will be flown to space as part of a program created by the Club for the Future, the company’s educational nonprofit foundation. The rocket-shaped box has been a magnet for local residents this week.”

If you were stopping thru Tucson I’d love to offer you a tour of Kitt Peak, but its closed to the public still . 🙁 If you like road side kitsch there’s The Thing off I-10 near the AZ NM Border, and of course DarkStar Blvd in Benson Az. Not to mention the Pima Air and Space Museum, and the Titan Missile Museum. But if you’re going to be in Tucson let me buy you lunch or dinner.

Sounds like a great trip. I’d love to tour Lowell Observatory for one, but every stop sounds terrific

After Meteor crater it would be good to go south to US60 and drive through the VLA. You will also get to see the New Mexico Tech observatories in Magdalena Mountains from the road. It is also shorter by around 100 miles, and cheaper on gas, if you full up in Holbrook so you are able to make it to Socorro, a good idea anyway because of the lack of gas stations on that route.

done something like that except we flew it. my oldest daughter and I took four weeks and did a sort of “Southwest tour” I had been sent down to Phoenix and a major manufactor of aviation displays to do some interfacing with them on what would become the B787 and 737 Max cockpit…at the end of it I took four weeks PTO and we flew all around the southwest. Sort of Sky and Penny. there is (or was) a great aviation museum at Grand Canyon airport. Lucky Lady was there…did some rafting at the Grand…the entire mess. it was quite nice. Kat now has the Bonanza 🙂

Amazing how the meteor missed the visitor center 🙂

Going “to see the elephant,” eh? Safe travels. It’s been well over four decades since the last time I went to see Meteor Crater, but the memories remain vivid. Enjoy.
