Blue Origin to Acquire Honeybee Robotics

ALTADENA, Calif., January 25, 2022 (Honeybee Robotics PR – Honeybee Robotics (Honeybee) today announced that it will be acquired by Blue Origin. With major operations in Longmont, Colorado and Altadena, California, Honeybee will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Origin, headquartered in Kent, Washington. The deal between Honeybee’s parent organization, Ensign-Bickford Industries, and Blue Origin is expected to close in mid-February. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed.
Since 1983, Honeybee Robotics has delivered more than 1,000 advanced projects to government and industrial customers in the spacecraft, planetary exploration, defense robotics, medical devices, mining, oil and gas, and utility infrastructure sectors. Its innovative, reliable, and literally groundbreaking robotic systems operate throughout space: in commercial launch vehicles and satellites and doing innovative work on the Moon, Mars, and Titan. Honeybee’s extensive experience in planetary robotics and mechanisms, drills, motors, actuators, drive electronics, and specialized space mechanisms is complementary to Blue Origin’s system capability’s goal of making space flight routine, and vision of opening space resources to benefit Earth.
“We’ve been building Honeybee’s capabilities and brand for almost forty years,” said Kiel Davis, President of Honeybee Robotics. “Joining Blue Origin is a major step forward for us. We thank the entire EBI family for their support over the last four and a half years. With Blue Origin we look forward to further expanding our capacity to meet the most exciting challenges in next-generation space transportation, space mobility, space destinations, and planetary science and exploration.”
Honeybee’s current business will continue to operate “business as usual” with no notable changes to its brand, leaders, customer commitments, products, services or processes. Over time, the combined capabilities of Honeybee and Blue Origin will create new opportunities, efficiencies, and innovations as they work together to develop space to benefit Earth.
“We’re beyond excited to welcome Honeybee Robotics to our team,” said Brent Sherwood, senior vice president of Advanced Development Programs for Blue Origin. “We know Honeybee’s leadership. We value the company’s brand, talent, unique expertise, and product lines. And we know that together we will make bold things possible.”

About Blue Origin
Blue Origin was founded by Jeff Bezos with the vision of enabling a future where millions of people are living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. In order to preserve Earth, Blue Origin believes that humanity will need to expand, explore, find new energy and material resources, and move industries that stress Earth into space. Blue Origin is working on this today by developing partially and fully reusable launch vehicles that are safe, low cost and serve the needs of all civil, commercial and defense customers. Blue Origin’s efforts to fly astronauts to space on New Shepard, produce reusable liquid rocket engines, create a highly reusable orbital launch vehicle with New Glenn and return Americans to the surface of the Moon will add new chapters to the history of spaceflight and move us closer to fulfilling that founding vision. Both are companies of great promise, and few real deliveries. They’re made for each other.
It’s ironic you say that, Andrew, since Honeybee was on the Phoenix Lander mission with University of Arizona where we collected the first ever sample of Martian ice.
I’d be happy to discuss with you some of our other firsts and world records in space some time.
That’s a one shot. As a company do you have a steady flow of payloads on a steady flow of flights? That’s the kind of record for a University to stand on. Blue Origin has a product that flies on a regular basis and carries people. They don’t totally fall short of crossing the finish line. Good luck under your new ownership. Believe me, I do wish you guys success.
We’ve been on all of the Mars rovers. We have a flight cadence of multiple payloads per year. We have five current Lunar missions. We’re happy with where we’re at 🙂
Then I stand corrected, and apologies offered.
No problem! We’ve definitely kept a low profile over the years
Thanks. But gotta admit when I’m wrong and set strait. 🙂
well done
Fire, aim, ready …… Shooting from the hip can make you so wrong sometimes. Egg on face on me today.
we all wear that bib at some point, the key is that you just move past it with honor. like you did. fly safe
I don’t see it that way, Andrew. We’ve been commenting here for a long time and I have great respect for you, Bob and many others. My comment to Hunter would be along the lines that it appears to me that Honeybee Robotics would probably be run like a family business, relatively small staff, innovative and cross-skilled. Bezos runs his organisations totally differently, e.g. staff died in freak weather, Bezos preferred to pin medals on those that went up on his “dick” rocket than put it a showing for the benefit of their grieving relatives. Honeybee may have access to doing grander things, but, at what cost? Time will tell. Stay safe, Paul.
Honeybee also has equipment on the Perseverance rover. They’ve delivered plenty.
This is great news, influx of capital to proven team with great track record. Space investment could use a lot more of these types of acquisitions. I wonder how much Marotta Controls or VACCO would go for
