Russia Designed New Space Station, Continued Development of Vostochny in 2021
MOSCOW (Roscosmos PR) — In 2021, a decision was made to start the preliminary design of the Russian space station. The creation of a Russian space station will allow the Russian Federation to maintain its presence in low Earth orbit and ensure the fulfillment of a wide range of tasks. Based on the results of the preliminary design of the station, decisions on its appearance and orbit will be made. It is not excluded that foreign partners will be allowed to participate in the project of the new orbital station.
At the Vostochny cosmodrome
In 2021, flight design tests of the Soyuz-2 space rocket complex were carried out at the Vostochny cosmodrome. 5 launches of the Soyuz-2 carrier rocket were carried out with OneWeb vehicles. The continuation of the flight tests of the Soyuz-2 was organized in terms of the validation launches scheduled for 2022.
In 2021, the technical design of the Amur space rocket complex of the first stage with the Angara-A5 rocket and the modernized Angara-A5M was completed.
The preliminary design of the Amur complex of the second stage with a promising heavy-class carrier rocket of increased payload Angara-A5V with an oxygen-hydrogen third stage has been completed. Based on its results, decisions will be made on the further development of the Amur space rocket complex.
In the course of the creation of the ground space infrastructure of the Vostochny cosmodrome, work is underway to create and retrofit a unified technical complex of the cosmodrome, to create equipment for the launch complex of the Soyuz-2 space rocket complex, special means of transporting the components of heavy space rockets (Angara-A5, the upper stage, a manned transport ship), refueling and neutralization stations, a physicochemical laboratory, storage and transportation complexes for propellant components.
Innovative development
In 2021, the Roscosmos State Corporation’s Supervisory Board approved the Roscosmos State Corporation’s Innovative Development Program for the period 2019-2025.
Within the perimeter of the head research organization of the rocket and space industry, TsNIIMash (part of the State Corporation “Roscosmos”), the implementation of the project of the Technopark of Space Technologies named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky. The Technopark should become a platform for the development of innovations, diversification and implementation of promising technologies in the Russian space industry. The Technopark is scheduled to open in 2024.
Various nanostructured coatings, methods of their application, composite and self-healing materials have been developed to expand the functionality of rocket and space technology products. Research in the field of nanotechnology and nanomaterials for use in rocket and space technology will continue in 2022-2025.

Luck will have nothing to do with it.
They cannot decide on the orbit because they cannot find an application for the station, and they’re unwilling to come out and say “we’re only building this for national prestige, no real work will be done on the station, so the orbit is immaterial.”
National prestige plus any space tourism money that might come their way. I’m guessing a fairly high orbital inclination would suit both Russia’s limited launch site alternatives and the tourism market.
this right now is the problem of all space agencies. there is no application that makes money so well we are just all doing things for the money that taxes are willing to spend
Unfortunately, the Russian space program suffers from chronic underfunding. I’ll believe in a new Russian space station when it launches.
