It’s interesting to see the dynamic go on. On the one hand, you have India using the knowledge of an existing space power (Russia) to accelerate their program – just like China did. On the other hand, India is turning to Russia at a time when they are doing progressively LESS business with them, but for political reasons they certainly can’t go to the other regional space power (China) for help. On the third hand, they are pursuing spaceflight for the same reason as their neighbor – to celebrate their ancient culture with their recently independent government. On the fourth hand (lots of hands in this example) they are pursuing the exact progression that Russia/China did (capsule, Salyut, etc.).
Lots of things to watch.
I wonder if the Soviet/Chinese/Indian model is the ‘natural’ progression of spaceflight? Rhetorically, SHOULD the US have gone Gemini/Apollo CSM to MOL/Skylab or something like that? Putting the Moon before a station and using wings (Shuttle) both look to be off the beaten path. The US did do Mir (both the original, and the hyper-mega-supersized-American-ISS version), but now ALL our options (Dragon, Starliner, Orion) are going back. Interesting to think about…
The original plan was to do first a Shuttle, then a station, then a lunar orbital craft, then a lander, then a moon base and so on. The old 1959 Men in Space series, the old Disney specials, the many articles by Dr. Von Braun, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, etc., all followed it.
Then NASA was told to get to the Moon in a decade and it was all tossed overboard.
It is sad to see NASA wooing China when politically, strategically and economically it makes more sense for NASA to partner with India.
No, NASA should get private space business going so that they can sell to other nations, along with us, and lower our costs.
This is why China continues to dump in various industries. Their goal is spend money up-front and then control the market with the cheapest items for themselves.
wrong.
India is doing as much business with them as ever before. Modi will not give them up as their closest Allie. Yes, we are selling some weapons to India, but Russia and India builds weapons together.
Congratulations to NASA, Trump and the GD GOP.
All of these nations need cheap training in space. Simple private space stations are needed. having other nations pay to go up there and be trained would make it all cheap and possible.
BUT, NASA under Bridenstine, Trump, and the GD GOP continue to dump massive $ into SLS/Orion/Lunar gateway, rather than a small amount of money into getting multiple private space stations vetted and going.
History will record that America’s fall was from 1980s through 2024, due to horrible presidents and GOP.
And that will be after America LYNCHES the GOP.
