RSC Energia Begins Work on New Soyuz-5 Booster

MOSCOW (RSC Energia PR) — Work is performed in compliance with the Order of the Government of the Russian Federation where RSC Energia is identified as the prime contractor of space rocket complex (SRC).

The following enterprises of State Corporation ROSCOSMOS: RSC Progress, FSUE TsENKI, etc. are the work co-executors.

Flight tests of new Russian launch vehicle (LV) Soyuz-5 are planned to be conducted for 2022 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The Russian launch vehicle Soyuz-5 of the load-carrying capacity of about 17 t, which is under development, will be as much as possible adapted to lauches from floating launch platform Sea Launch and later – from the Vostochny Cosmodrome.

The new launch vehicle may be used for manned transport spacecraft Federatsiya injection into low near-earth orbit, in 2022 it is planned to be launched in the unmanned option and in 2024 – already with the crew.

In the future the main components and technologies of the Soyuz-5 LV may be used to develop a superheavy-class launch vehicle.

SRC includes a medium-class launch vehicle, the DM-type Upper Stage, as well as the modernized ground infrastructure.

RSC Energia is a leading enterprise in rocket and space industry, the prime organization for manned space systems.     Good luck Energia, looks like a good rocket. While one would hope it takes less time to simply make a fat Zenit, let’s hope it takes less time that Angara!
