NewsWest9.com reports the Midland City Council has approved the expenditure of up to $200,000 to build a rocket engine test stand for XCOR at the Midland International Air and Space Port. The money will come from the Midland Development Corporation.

XCOR has a lease to move its R&D facility to the west Texas city, which has put up incentives worth $10 million for the company. The move is planned for after XCOR begins flight tests of its Lynx suborbital spacecraft in Mojave, Calif.

That report is pretty sparse on details. I wonder what they get $200,000.

XCOR uses an old munitions bunker and a concrete pad here in Mojave for tests. The test stand is mobile.

Midland has the same type of munitions bunkers. They need to fix up one of the bunkers, construct a concrete pad and make other improvements. Not sure about the cost, but if they have to run utilities out to it that could explain things.

This is actually part o the deal with Midland that was signed a couple of years ago.

I wonder if it will annoy the endangered Prairie Chickens, If so there might be limits on its use. I wonder how close the nearest breeding population is.
