Awesome NASA Video of Proposed Titan Submarine
Video Caption: What would a submarine to explore the liquid methane seas of Saturn’s Moon Titan look like? This video shows one submarine concept that would explore both the shoreline and the depths of this strange world that has methane rain, rivers and seas! The design was developed for the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Program, by NASA Glenn’s COMPASS Team, and technologists and scientists from the Applied Physics Lab and submarine designers from the Applied Research Lab.

What’s so awesome about it? The “please proceed” part?
What a shame it’s now legal for the US Government to issue propaganda. The graphical ‘analysis’ of ‘the data’ is the worst kind of pandering possible. At least try to educate the population that’s going to pay for it by focusing on the basics, and any REAL system that will be used. Not to mention the rush of bubbles coming off the kilowatt to megawatt class nuclear power source.
Heck, let’s go all the way. Maybe a movie about how the Titan’s are forced to advance their technology base by a crash technology program to decrypt the transmissions to and from the DSN so they can locate and defeat the American interplanetary submarine force harassing Titan merchant ship convoys in their desperate attempts to say “Hi”. And arch villain NASA submarine admiral Donut’s desperate attempts to maintain budget in spite of silence from the Titans. That would be a great movie.
when was propaganda ever illegal??
Ever since 2013 with the repeal of the Smith Mundt Act of 1948.

A taste of the politics can be had here.

This film has several blatant falsehoods used for visual effect and emotional punch. I admit my sense of taste is offended, and I admit it means little. However if you watch a NASA ‘proposal’ film from the ’60’s they are very tame and some still hold technical water today. Check this one out.

That’s 48 years old and still holds true today. In another 48 years it will still hold some weight and be viewed as a real stab at the problem and an excellent presentation
In 48 years this ‘proposal’ video will be viewed as a comic book..
well i think the best response to that is a hearty LOL
as far as i can tell this is primarily regarding content about culture and foreign policy, such information was distributed internationally but not at home. the amendment allows this information to be distributed internally.
it does not make propaganda legal, nor does it make something that had formerly been illegal, legal.
your spin on this topic is absurd. frankly i think it’s a good thing that we have access to the content that was previously not available, it allows for much better public oversight.
Well I guess that begs the question as to what you understand the term propaganda to mean, and can you point to a bill or CFR that bans it?
both of which are utterly irrelevant to this nice video.
Andrew, I understand what you would like to express in contrast to “Hug Doug”, who even did not understand what the problem is behind your detection of propaganda (or manipulation), which might be possible because he is already a victim of all these propaganda.
this isn’t propaganda. IT’S A PROPOSAL. this is just concept art for a Titan exploration mission that may or may not get funding.
settle down, kids. cut down on the paranoia. not everything is a conspiracy.
It is also about our time (“Zeitgeist”) in “liberal” western societies, in which all must be exaggreated. This video is not the worst at all. But in contrast, the productions of the sixties has an educational value, were pleasant and stand firm on ground.
… again this is a PROPOSAL. it’s not a mission plan. it’s not meant to be realistic or educational. it has nothing to do with zeitgeist, it is not propaganda, or anything like that.
if anything, this is artwork.
i don’t know how thick you have to be to not understand this.
Personally, I think that this is kind of cool, but, do not think that we will find much.
I am far more interested in seeing how a balloon does on venus. That should be easier, but again, I have to wonder if there will be something to find.
What do you expect to find on Venus?
Why do you think Carbon Dioxide and Sulfuric Acid are more interesting than Hydrocarbons in a complete “hydro”logical cycle?
1) venus is a lot easier and cheaper to get to.
2) the blimp should be easier and cheaper to build.
3) I do not expect to find much there. Nor at Titan.
4) of course, that is the whole point. You think that you will not find anything, and then suddenly you do.
5) I have to wonder if by studying venus, we will not find interesting parallels here, esp. with its co2.
A submarine is too complex, not only in respect to required autonomy. I propose to use a moored buoy, from which a kind of thethered small “submarine” is launched.
