Musk proposed either mining H2O from the soil or extracting it from the atmosphere to get the hydrogen for the CH4. It seems to me that having to haul an enormous volume of LH2 from Earth would be a show-stopper. It’s not just ascent from the Martian surface but also a return boost and potential course correction burns and perhaps even some deceleration to capture back into Earth orbit.
