A Very Busy Week in Mojave

mojave_tower_sunset_smGreetings from the High Desert! Here is my end-of-the-week roundup of all things Mojave.

It’s been an eventful week. WhiteKnightTwo flew twice on solo flights as Scaled Composites and Virgin Galactic begin to ramp up for a series of powered tests of SpaceShipTwo.

There was an engine test this afternoon at around 2:40 p.m. PDT. A cloud of dirt rose over the desert at the Scaled Composites test stand. The cloud was brown instead of black, indicating the test — which ran about 20 seconds — was not of the RocketMotorTwo hybrid engine. It is possible they tested a liquid-fuel engine.

Scaled Composites had an all-hands meeting on Thursday afternoon in a hangar along the flight line. It has the airport buzzing because it was an unusually large gathering. A lot of speculation about what it was for (quarterly all-hands meeting, some big announcement about…something), but there’s no definitive information.

Plane Crazy Saturday is tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you’re in the area, come out and enjoy the fine weather, see the planes on the ramp, and listen to XCOR’s Mike Massee talk about photographing rockets at 11 a.m.
