The Senate Thursday night passed a compromise NASA authorization bill that would see the agency get back on track developing a new heavy lift rocket while providing some funding for commercial rocket companies to fly humans to space.

The bill, championed by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D- Florida, and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, broke a stalemate that started in February when President Barack Obama said he would cancel the NASA-run Constellation moon-rocket program and instead use commercial companies to send astronauts into low Earth orbit.

“Senate passage of this comprehensive legislation is a critical milestone that will boost America’s human spaceflight program,” Hutchison said in a statement. The bill is also supported by Senators John D. Rockefeller, D-West Virginia, David Vitter, R-Lousiana., and George LeMieux, R-Florida…

Administration officials say that the White House is neither supporting nor opposing the bill.
