Gary Martin
Director of New Ventures and Communications, NASA Ames

Came to Ames because it was unique – a lot of efforts at using commercial space – Pete Worden is very innovative, but even before he got here Ames had a reputation for innovation

He has seen the rest of the agency changing policies in order to accommodate work that has been done here….

~ 200 Public/Private Partnerships Annually:

Google – cooperation on fighting forest fires in California
Cisco – looking at how to set up tools for carbon cap and trade
Google Mars – Getting NASA’s lunar data to the public – similar agreement with Microsoft
Odyssey Moon – spacecraft bus for moon flight

Very optimistic that the new NASA leadership (Charles Bolden and Lori Garver) will be very supportive of commercial/public partnerships…

Jeffrey Smith
Deputy Chief, Entrepreneurial Initiatives Division, NASA Ames

NASA has long been focused on sustainability….

Green Initiatives:

SkyTran – advanced public transportation system
Google – desalination project
SciFocus – solar thermal program

Michael Marlaire
Director of Partnerships, NASA Ames

NASA Research Park
Have 50 to 60 partners on site presently

Discussed NASA Ames’ plans to build a research and development campus – partnership with universities in California as well as technology companies such as Google…

Areas: space and Earth sciences, IT, commercial space, economic development in space, etc.

“You have the best intellectual stew right now right here on this site.”

Changing the way that NASA does commercial space: “We have abused people for years on how we do commercial space.”

NASA’s new leadership is very receptive to the types of public/private partnerships that Ames is doing….
