Just got back from the ISU/SU opening ceremony and reception. It was a great ceremony that I hope people had a chance to see on the webcast. Got to welcome in a new class of ISU students and catch up with some old friends.

The event was held at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. It featured addresses by NASA Ames Director Pete Worden, ISU and SU founder Peter Diamandis, and a video by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Recalling how he had fallen in love with California as an immigrant, the governor predicted that the students would do the same and tell everyone, “I’ll be back.”

Violinist Kenji Williams performed a piece called Bella Gaia, which was accompanied by a video show different views of the Earth. It was spectacular. I’ll see if I can post a video of it.

ISU President Michael Simpson and ISU SSP 2009 Director Angie Bukley presented an honorary degree to Lin Burke, who with her husband Jim has been at almost every ISU summer session since the first Boston one in 1988. It was very moving.

A reception was held afterward at the visitor’s center at NASA Ames. I had the opportunity to meet a number of the ISU and SU students. A very impressive bunch.

To the SU folks, good luck. You’re the pioneers of this new university. So, take the responsibility seriously.

And as an ISU alumnus, let me just say:

Welcome to The Family!

You may want to get out, but we’ll pull you back in. Best not to even try.
