It comes with crazy work hours, grinding travel and decent though not exceptional pay, but this job is definitely out of this world.

After an intensive year-long recruitment program, the Canadian Space Agency is set to announce two new astronauts who will be part of the world’s next generation of orbital explorers.

The first Canadian hires in 17 years, they rose to the top from a pool of 5,351 qualified candidates tested for prowess in everything from swimming skills to performance and judgment in super-stressful situations.

Short-listed candidates — just 16 in the final round — more than meet the basic requirements with impressive credentials and broad experience ranging from performing sophisticated medical surgery to running ultra marathons and scaling Mount Everest.
