CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (NASA PR) — NASA is targeting 7:50 a.m. EDT Thursday, July 30, for the launch of its Mars 2020 Perseverance rover on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The launch window is approximately two hours, with a launch opportunity every five minutes.

Live launch coverage will begin at 7 a.m., on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

NASA’s Aeronautics Experts Help Prepare Ingenuity to Fly on Mars

You work at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California and have proven time and again that when it comes to landing and operating robotic probes and rovers on the distant Red Planet you pretty much know what you’re doing.

But it’s never a sure thing when it comes to planetary exploration.

A Look at the Science of Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover

Launch to Mark ULA’s 20th Mission to the Red Planet

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., July 27, 2020 (ULA PR) – A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket is in final preparations to launch NASA’s Mars 2020 mission with the Perseverance rover. The launch is on track for July 30 at Space Launch Complex-41 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Launch is planned for 7:50 a.m. EDT at the opening of a two-hour launch window. The live launch broadcast begins at 7 a.m. EDT on NASA TV and at www.ulalaunch.com.

Northrop Grumman Provides Navigation System for NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover Mission

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., July 24, 2020 (Northrop Grumman PR) – Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) will once again be the provider of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to support an expedition to Mars when NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Perseverance Mars Rover launches between July 30 and August 15.

It will land at Mars’ Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The mission’s four major scientific objectives include studying the planet’s habitability, seeking biosignatures of past life, collecting core samples of the surface, and testing oxygen production in the planet’s atmosphere.

PolyU Contributes to the China’s First Mars Mission with Mars Camera

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has successfully developed and manufactured the “Mars Landing Surveillance Camera” (“Mars Camera”), one of the key instruments onboard the Mars spacecraft, to participate in the Nation’s first Mars mission Tianwen-1, which was launched today.

HONG KONG, JULY 23, 2020 (PolyU PR) — The spacecraft for the Mars probe comprises an orbiter, a lander and a rover, aiming to complete orbiting, landing and roving in one single mission, an unprecedented attempt globally, as well as to obtain scientific exploration data on the Red Planet.

Located on the outside top surface of the Mars lander platform, the Mars Camera will monitor the landing status, the surrounding environment and movements of the rover with respect to the unfolding and status of the solar panels and antennae. The information is critical for the successful movement of the Mars Rover onto the Mars surface.

WASHINGTON (NASA PR) — NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission cleared its Flight Readiness Review Wednesday, an important milestone on its way to the launch pad. The meeting was an opportunity for the Mars 2020 team and launch vehicle provider United Launch Alliance to report on the readiness of the spacecraft, along with the Atlas V rocket, flight and ground hardware, software, personnel, and procedures. The daily launch window on Thursday, July 30, opens at 7:50 a.m. EDT.

NASA to Discuss Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Mission with Space Foundation

WASHINGTON (NASA PR) — NASA leadership will participate in a virtual discussion with the Space Foundation on the upcoming Mars 2020 Perseverance  rover launch at 1 p.m. EDT Monday, July 20. The event, called Roving the Red Planet, will stream live on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

The Space Foundation will moderate the discussion, which features NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, who will highlight how NASA’s Artemis program for the Moon and the Mars Perseverance rover mission are helping prepare humanity for its next giant leap – human exploration of Mars. Other panelists include:

  • Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate
  • Michael Watkins, director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
  • MiMi Aung, Ingenuity helicopter project manager, JPL
  • Thomas Zelibor, chief executive officer, Space Foundation

The Mars 2020 mission is scheduled to launch from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 7:50 a.m. EDT Thursday, July 30. It will land at Jezero Crater on Mars on Feb. 18, 2021.

The mission, managed by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate and JPL, will provide key insight into some of the challenges associated with future human exploration of Mars. NASA’s Launch Services Program based at Kennedy Space Center is managing the launch.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (Northrop Grumman PR) — This summer, Northrop Grumman is playing an important role in a historic phase of Mars exploration. Northrop Grumman’s LN-200S inertial measurement unit (IMU) will provide extended life inertial navigation for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (JPL) Perseverance Mars Rover, a mission that will seek signs of ancient life on the Red Planet.
