Watch Natalie Portman Goes Astro Crazy in “Lucy in the Sky”

Video Caption: In LUCY IN THE SKY, Natalie Portman plays astronaut Lucy Cola, who returns to Earth after a transcendent experience during a mission to space – and begins to lose touch with reality in a world that now seems too small.

Editor’s Note: This appears to be (very loosely) based on the Lisa Nowak story. Hence, the unofficial monkier, “Lucy in the Sky with Diapers.”

Sorry, I couldn’t resist….

Doubt there’s any NASA production support, or good vibes from female astronauts for perpetuating the usual BS.

  • Robert G. Oler

are we doing the Lisa Nowak nutty time 🙂

  • Jeff Smith

Ren and Stimpy already covered that ground:

So if this is based on Nowak, why would they have given her a deep south accent, when Nowak was from Rockville, MD?

  • Robert G. Oler

my impressions about her was she was nutty…and for a bit…she was diagnosed with all those things in the end…but where I am from we just call that plain being criminal

  • Jeff2Space

I’m sure NASA wanted nothing to do with this movie. Note the “strange” NASA logo they used in the movie. Just different enough to not get them in trouble, IMHO.

  • Robert G. Oler

it was the subject of a great op ed by me

Links, Robert, links! The road to success is paved with relentless self-promotion!

    Okay, then!

  • duheagle

Perhaps there are actually people from Maryland who speak with a drawl. Heck, I have relatives from Pennsylvania who speak that way.

More likely, though, it’s just Hollywood’s way of letting us know, not so subtly, that this woman is a loon. Broad southern accents seem to have long since become Hollywood code for “dumb as a bag of hammers” and/or “crazy-ass killer.”

  • redneck

When people hear my southern accent at conferences, you quickly notice that they deduct about 20 points from their estimate of my IQ. But after we talk for a few minutes, they deduct 40.

  • Lee

Fair enough. I tend to do the same thing with South Boston, NYC, and other “city” accents…

  • duheagle

Ah, yes, the eternal question. “Bubba” vs. “Vinnie” – who’s dumber?
