    I keep hearing this assertion. Oddly enough, I sometimes hear the same people lamenting that NASA doesn’t do anything “interesting” in human spaceflight anymore.

    Actual human exploration involves risk. Trying to minimize the risk is a good thing. But that can go too far such that you’re unwilling to actually try anything new (i.e. stifling innovation).

    not mission critical? the mission can be completed without it I guess but the economics of it, at least if you listen to spaceX collapse without it
