The colonizing of Mars is another one of the fantasies of the space fans…urged on by Musk who displays his weed smoking side when he goes there…

What folks just don’t seem to grasp is that space settlement isn’t about a planet B, but about extending humanity’s resource base to save the Earth. And when I talk about resources it’s not just in terms of physical resources, but technological and intellectual resources.

The very technologies that will be needed for space settlement, closed system ecologies, high density agriculture, additive manufacturing, etc. will greatly reduce the per capita impact of humanity on the Earth and provide the capabilities needed to adapt to climate change. Much of the technology we depend on today, mobile phones, GPS, GIS, AI, etc. had it roots in America’s early space program. The economic development and settlement of the Solar System will create a similar cascade of technology that will benefit all of humanity.

The Age of Discovery that created the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions was started by the fantasy of Prestor John and the desire of Prince Henry to find him. Don’t knock the power of a good fantasy to drive the progress of humanity. 😊

Yes! Exactly my view and I hope the view of most space enthusiasts.

Given that even the so-called “right-wing” parties in Germany have drunk deep of the Climate Change Kool-Aid, it is hardly surprising that an astronaut from that country would be parroting the Warmist line for public consumption. Failure to do so would certainly prove fatal to his career.
