I thought size didn’t matter. Maybe in cases of bad aim, it is better to be bigger?

  • What’s the average miss distance? Is it getting smaller with each try?

  • Michael Halpern

Parachutes are a little less accurate than rockets

  • Robert G. Oler

Michael…what is the mass of the fairings?

  • Michael Halpern

    I don’t know

  • Andrew Tubbiolo

That they increased the net size, it would seem to indicate that they’re just missing captures. it would also indicate that the boat can’t maneuver fast enough to make up for last minute variance over the established glide slope. Too bad we have not gone up to Eloy to get our skydiving ratings so we knew first hand what it feels like to be on final under a square canopy and what winds can do.

just curious…wondering if air recovery is simpler…

  • Michael Halpern

Apparently 2 tons air recovery is anything but simple, especially when you consider when they would have to start the approach and how far out they’d be

  • ThomasLMatula

That is about four times the mass of the film canisters C-130’s would recover from the old spy satellites. Wonder if they could handle that large a payload.

  • Robert G. Oler

A C130 could grab it, but what they would do with it…is another matterie they could not haul it in…have to look and see what a helo could do…dont have that knowledge

  • Michael Halpern

The thing is at that point it might be cheaper to make a new fairing

Or that the fairing is tumbling more than expected after hitting the net.

I can’t see that near misses or lack of manoeuvring would be solved with such a small change in area.

  • Robert G. Oler

a CH53 could easily carry both of them but of course could only grab one…

  • Michael Halpern

    More transportation cost

has anyone calculated the over-turning angles here?

I’m not a marine architect but, more mass higher above the CG and then potentially having 2 tons of mass impacting out at that big lever arm, seems unwise to me….

Boats have a tough time adding mast radars, this is mass 100X that.
