Watch Virgin Orbit Test LauncherOne’s Fairing

Video Caption: By popular demand, here is another fairing separation test! The fairing protects the payload from dynamic pressure and heat. Our fairings are tested countless times before they make their debut. In this instance, we are testing the separation mechanisms that split the two halves.

Poor Sir Richard. He really backed the wrong horse, the Ansari X-Prize and Scaled Composites, and is really desperate to stay relevant.

That looks like an anemic separation compared to the vacuum chamber test of the Falcon 9 fairing, linked below. Note how the F9 fairing halves push outward along their entire length with the two halves remaining parallel to one another. These VO fairings are pivoting on their base and don’t separate from the vehicle until late in the process. I wonder how confident they are that under > 1g acceleration the fairings won’t recontact the vehicle. No reason to make it more complicated than it needs to be, but I hope their mechanism isn’t too simple.
