Russians Name New Human Spacecraft

MOSCOW (RSC Energia PR) — Today, January 15, 2016, the jury, chaired by Director General, SC “Roskosmos” Igor Komarov announced the results of the contest for the best name for the new manned transport spacecraft Russia.

The winner was Andrew Smokotin from Kemerovo, first suggested the name “Federation”. The jury is the “Federation” as the best of the three “finalists” competition (“Gagarin”, “Federation”, “vector”) and will be the official name of the new ship. The names “Gagarin” and “vector” can be used in the future for other projects the space industry of Russia.

Competition for the best name for the new Russian spacecraft was organized by RSC “Energia” involving “Roskosmos” and ACCD in late August 2015. Author name “Federation” will receive the grand prize – a trip in the spring of 2016 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, and the presence at the launch of manned spacecraft “Soyuz” to the International Space Station (ISS). Crew PTC will make up to four people. In the autonomous flight vehicle can be up to 30 days, when flying as part of the space station – up to 1 year. The total weight of the ship during the flight to the space station will be equal to 14.4 tonnes (19 tons during the flight to the Moon), the mass of the recovery vehicle – 9 tons. The length of the ship – 6.1 meters. Rated overload during the descent – 3 g. To launch spacecraft into orbit is planned to use the carrier rocket heavy class “Angara-A5V.”
