Meeting of Central Florida counties to retain space workers is overdue move

When NASA’s space shuttle fleet retires next year, thousands of Kennedy Space Center workers will lose their jobs.

Brevard County will suffer the worst, but the impact will ripple across Central Florida as other jobs and services that sustain the work force are also hit.

That’s why today’s meeting of economic leaders from seven regional counties is important and overdue as they look to retain the shuttle hands in other industries and prevent a brain drain of the skilled professionals.

In all, upwards of 90 officials from Brevard, Orange, Volusia, Osceola, Lake, Seminole and Flagler counties will gather at the University of Central Florida in Orlando for the session.
